about

Malplacé is the debut album from Swedish/greek outfit Organ Donor, a combo with members from Viagra Boys, Grismask, VÖ, Mammock, Angles, Fire! Orchestra, Aurora Ensemble, CBVB and CB3. With improvisation as the main method, the band have formed 6 diverse yet coherent tracks, spanning from instrumental kraut, to mystic themes perhaps reminiscent of John Lurie or Loren Connors, to dark, minimal pulsating improv and punkish, full-on, noise outbursts.

LINER NOTES, BY JON DALE:
In their first ever session, the Organ Donor quintet manage to hit two seemingly conflicting targets with preternatural ease. They find their metier quickly, as though they’ve been doing this kind of thing forever. But they also don’t sound ‘settled in’ – you can’t predict quite what’s coming next when listening to the seven songs of Malplacé. Organ Donor ask genuine questions of their material, even down to its minutiae, to the order of: what would happen if that hypnotic groove was scrawled over by fierce lung-bursts of alto sax? What can we achieve with the stop-start dynamics of “Power Tools”? How can “Sci-Fi Marmots” drift, tenderly, on a carpet of texture, cymbals stinging through the sky as a clarinet sends smoke signals out to listeners, the double bass an insistent pulse? And when this rich multiplicity pours out of the music’s core, why not let it all sit together on the same page?

So, what I perhaps appreciate most about Organ Donor is that everything’s on the table – there’s no need to delimit what these five musicians are keen to do. The music exists in a welcome non-place; it trusts its own instincts and follows its own logic. It ratchets in intensity quickly, rides out moments of disruption, easing into simpatico playing at one moment, then rocketing unexpectedly into clashing figures. The guitar phrases near the beginning of “A Sleepwalking Beauty” are lush and poetic; the drums and clarinet that corral around them somehow both bolster and undercut that lushness. Elements of Malplacé touch on any number of genres – Krautrock, post-rock, electronica, free improvisation, chamber jazz, avant-prog – but the music is never beholden to those generic constraints; its varied and unpredictable shapes form from the logic of five musicians, playing in a room. It’s a music of encounter and of possibility; and the music is always warm and welcoming, even at its most oblique. Malplacé is deeply human music, made on a human scale.
